Education Outreach

The SORALO Education Program

Almost of SORALO’s programs, particularly those based at the Lale’enok Resource Center have an education component.  Education is viewed in its broadest sense, in the generation and sharing of knowledge. Each program, from the Cattleman’s Association to the Cultural Heritage program included information sharing.

However the main Education Program is based at the Lale’enok Resource Center and has the following, more specific aims and objectives:

  • To host and coordinate local and international education groups to the centre and projects.
  • To promote Lale’enok as a field study center both locally and internationally.
  • To provide content and support to the environmental clubs in the south rift schools
  • To develop the education capacity of conservation leaders to be able to package and relay information to their community
  • To be the centre for information dissemination and feedback in the South Rift, be it traditional or scientific information.
  • The program gives support to schools by donating learning materials from our wellwishers.

To coordinate information dissemination through;

    • Hosting annual Lale’enok field days
    • Hosting local schools in an annual conservation day
    • Hosting local schools for conservation education weekends.
    • Producing international scientific publications.

·       To develop education-based international collaborations e.g. Maasai Music Project, Earth Expeditions, CZBG.

EDUCATION OUTREACH WILDLIFE CLUBS 2014

The Education outreach program aims to publish a Maasai guide book to the wildlife species found within Olkiramatian and Shompole group ranches. We tasked students from the five local schools that we closely work with to come up with lists of the common trees/bushes, insects, mammals, birds, reptiles, herbs and grass found within the two group ranches. These schools are: Entasopia primary school, Oloibortoto primary school, Olkiramatian primary school, Oloika primary school and Patterson secondary school. The program will facilitate the student to investigate these species and eventually document them in forms of songs and dances, drawings, poems, debates as well as publishing a simple guide book to the local wildlife species in the area. Maasai elders have vast indigenous knowledge and their assistance is critical in helping us achieve our goals.

Lale'enok facilitates the advancement of community livelihoods, sustainable resource management and human-wildlife coexistence through the integration of research, livestock development, tourism, and other income generating community projects. As a physical place for information storage and sharing, the centre provides the community with a forum to engage partners in knowledge creation, dissemination and application.
